On the front of house, crocodiles, elephants and money admire the sky. Scientist, passionate of geography, astronomy and orientalism culture, Antoine d’Abbadie (1810-1897) was the first person to draw a map of Ethiopia. Deeply attached to his Basque root, is an intense defender of his culture and language. His Château, is inspired by the medieval architecture.

On the front of Abbadia, crocodile, elephant and monkey are looking at the stars. Inside the decoration was drawn to abroad: African symbol, Arabic lounge, Irish references… The building sheltered also an observatory and a chapel where Antoine and his wife, Virginie, are buried.

Listed as French Historical Monument and “Maison des Illustres”, Abbadia is opened from January 23d to December 31st. Enjoy your tour to discover many events of the Château Abbadia! Concerts, scientists activities for kids, night stars…
