DESCRIPTION

Did you know that Bayonne and the Basque Country was one of the main strongholds of France up to the 20th century? Have you ever seen a Makila? The stick with its hidden weapon carved from a living branch of the medlar tree carried by Basque shepherds that, even today, is handed down from generation to generation… Do you know why the architecture of Basque houses differs from one province to another?

At the Basque and History of Bayonne Museum, the Basque culture reveals its richness through twenty or so rooms each with a special theme laid out over the Museum’s three floors.

Learn about Ama Lur, the Mother Earth and her legends. Call into the Etxe, the traditional Basque home and its famous Zuzulu. Stroll around Medieval shipyards found along the quays in Bayonne. There she blows! …go back in time to understand more about life on the open seas experienced by whale hunters and privateers through paintings, sculptures, models and sea vessels.

Basque history and mythology, architecture, dancing and the fandango, Basque pelote… the Basque Museum is a treasure trove of 2,000 objects and no fewer secrets and anecdotes that you are invited to discover in the setting of the imposing Dagourette House, former bourgeois residence dating from the end of the 16th century.

More than a visit, the Basque Museum takes you on a voyage from the dawn of the great upheavals of the contemporary world to the present day.
